What is Virtuosolar and what are the main benefits?

Virtuosolar is a cutting-edge PV design software add-on for AutoCAD.

The software enables users to design utility scale and commercial Solar PV plants on 3D terrains and rooftops. Virtuosolar makes you able to build PV systems shadow-free and highest irradiance at any geographical location within a specified time frame.

The software ensures consistent project design by automatically generated solar module and mounting structure layouts, electrical string mapping and numbering, string overview reports, cable calculations, bill of materials and solar irradiance visualization.Due to its intelligent BIM functionalities and databases, the add-on is able to detect conflicts and errors.

Operating on AutoCAD (2015-2019), Virtuosolar gives you the flexibility to integrate your own engineering house style and standards.  Virtuosolar layers can automatically match your company’s custom layer setup. Drawings can be exchanged via the standard DWG/DXF format.

What are the Virtuoslar system requirements?

Virtuosolar operates on AutoCAD 2015-2019 (except LT) and need the add-on Plex.Earth to be installed in order to created 3D terrains for ground mounted PV systems.
If you use Virtuosolar only for rooftops, then Plex.Earth is not needed unless you would like to import topographic images directly from Google Earth or Bing Maps at correct scale and GPS positions.

  • Memory: 8GB minimum

  • Graphics Card: NVidia Quadro (Minimum 1GB) or AMD FirePro (Minimum 1GB)
  • Pointing Device: MS-Mouse compliant device
  • .NET Framework: Version 4.5
How to install Virtuosolar on my computer

Follow the next steps to install Virtuosolar:

  1. Close all AutoCAD applications
  2. Run the setup file: Virtuosolar.msi (x64 or x86 depending your Windows Operating System)
  3. Fill in the activation code which you received from Virtuosolar by email to register Virtuosolar.
  4. The program will be installed in the folders C:ProgramDataAutodeskApplicationPlugins and C:ProgramData
  5. Virtuosolar will automatically be launched when starting up AutoCAD
  6. If you would like to make use of the Plex.Earth functionalities (topographic AutoCAD add-on), you need to download and install this software at www.plexearth.com and also a desktop version of Google Earth
How does the user interface looks like?

Virtuosolar consists of a main ribbon tab Virtuosolar and contextual tabs Roof Modelling, System Config, String Mapping and Cable Calc.  Opening these tabs is done by clicking on the particular buttons on the Virtuosolar main tab.  Each of the contextual tabs can be closed again to make more space in the ribbon if needed.
